Q: What does your company do and how long has it been in operation?
A: Headquartered in Rochester, NY, Pictometry is a leading provider of geo-referenced aerial, oblique image libraries and related software. With customers throughout the U.S. and licensing partners around the globe, Pictometry uses a proprietary image capture process to produce Pictometry Intelligent Images® so you can See Everywhere, Measure Anything, Plan Everything.® We have been capturing imagery since 2001.
Pictometry technologies are widely used by county GIS, planning and assessing professionals around the country and a growing number of commercial businesses including those in insurance, utilities, real estate, construction, and more. Unlike traditional geospatial information systems that rely on only an orthogonal, or top-down view of an area, Pictometry captures images obliquely, or from an angle, and create a more natural three-dimensional view so that users can see land features and structures clearly and in their entirety.
With only minutes of training, a new user can access detailed imagery for every square foot of a region and learn to navigate quickly and easily between views of a map to images associated with it, and specific features contained within images such as doors, manholes, fences, and fire hydrants. Pictometry’s tools can be fully integrated with other systems for added ease of use. The locational data associate with each pixel makes it possible for users to measure numerous geographic details, such as distance, height, latitude/longitude coordinates, directional bearing and relative positioning.
Pictometry’s image capture process captures every square foot of an area in high resolution detail, from both orthogonal and oblique angles, giving Pictometry’s imagery something traditional aerial imagery or even satellite and GPS mapping can’t provide: a detailed metric oblique view of any feature. Pictometry Intelligent Images® offer sophisticated and often critical visual information in 12 easy to navigate views, putting information at user fingertips and making it possible to work remotely via a wireless connection or from the convenience of an office desktop.
Q: To what do you attribute your company’s success in the communications industry?
A: We have developed solutions that provide telecommunications professionals benchmark operational awareness from the desktop:
Outside Plant (OSP) Infrastructure Management
- See your aerial, ground or underground infrastructure layered over our 3D-like imagery and make linear measurements including distance, height, area, etc. without rolling a truck. Pre-planning analysis at your fingertips.
Route Planning and Network Expansion
- Obtain high-resolution imagery of difficult to reach terrain and pre-qualify any coordinate location without leaving your desktop
Building Identification and Exploration with Critical 360°
- With hundreds of central offices and thousands of wire centers across national networks, view entry and exit infrastructure by entering an address and query inside plant assets with the click of a mouse. Access your private security network.
HCA Visualization and Metric 3D Modeling
- Preparing an accurate WiMAX network proposal in a metropolitan area can be quiet the challenge. Plan your base station locations with line of site and photorealistic 3D building renderings that you can measure on.
Visual Asset Inventory
- If you have a lot ground assets spread across a metropolitan location, region or the entire nation, you can geo-locate each coordinate using our accurate, geo-referenced image library from your desktop. If you have an existing GIS platform, not a problem. We offer a visual information system that compliments existing GIS solutions and brings your maps to life.
Q: What have been the biggest obstacles your company has faced in the marketplace?
A: Our technology has transformed the way telecommunications companies manage their data and assets. Traditional satellite imagery and mapping technologies provide a level of intelligence that most GIS, planning, development, assessment and engineering departments can relate to, both in government and enterprise environments. Pictometry technology challenges these traditional methods and is considered somewhat of a disruptive technology, sometimes considered too good to be true.
With Pictometry Online, we have created a new realm of possibilities with the oblique view by leveraging the way our minds process visual information. Layer GIS infrastructure and relational data that can be queried via a simple web based interface at a cost sometime 80 percent less than traditional offerings can sometimes be difficult to accept … but seeing is believing.
Q: What do you see as your greatest challenges going forward?
A: With such powerful technology, time to market becomes a priority and tailoring solutions to accommodate an ever evolving telecommunications landscape will test any technology company organization. As we continue to receive feedback from customers to define more robust requirements, it is paramount that our development efforts are in synch to ensure customer retention and a strong brand.
Q: What have been some of your company’s most recent achievements (new customer wins, new service/product deployment, etc.)?
A: Pictometry has enhanced the capability of our 3D models by integrating this 3D technology with the highly sophisticated Pictometry 3D Viewer. The models are incorporated into our advanced 3D viewer enabling users to navigate and work their way through high-resolution 3D environments. The authenticity of our models is incomparable, making viewers feel immersed in the actual environment.
Pictometry Real3D Viewer enables you to:
• Simply view and navigate through 3D models
• Create line-of-site between two locations
• Easily move buildings out of a model and create new buildings
• Overlay GIS layers and other shape files
• Communicate effectively to clearly demonstrate a point
• Allow users to obtain a real world view
• Integrate 2D oblique view with 3D globe
Q: Why is it important for your company to be a COMPTEL member?
A: COMPTEL provides a diverse and technology driven audience that can help drive the evolution of Pictometry solutions for the telecommunications industry globally.
